Kickoff of my Quilting Blog

I like to make sh*t with my hands, in fact, our whole family enjoys working on projects together.  A year and a half ago my wife got appendicitis just as the summer was kicking off here.  This meant that she could not get in the pool for four weeks, which is how we usually spend time together during the summer months.  My wife has been an avid quilter for years and I have always supported her quilting habit by finding quilt stores to visit and helping select fabrics for particular quilts.

Instead of hanging out in the pool that month, I started spending some time with her in the quilt room and learned that the skills I had built in woodworking transferred to a type of quilting that we liked called applique.  It started with making a "mug rug", what I would call a giant coaster.  I enjoyed the process and really liked the sense of satisfaction when the project was completed.  The feeling of satisfaction was just like when I had completed a woodworking project.

When we moved to Texas I lost my dedicated woodworking shop and had not completed a project like this in many years.  I became hooked quickly.  I started purchasing row by row kits because many of them were applique, large enough to keep me occupied for a while, but also quick enough that I would complete one and be able to move on to the next challenge.

By the end of the summer, my wife realized that I had taken over her sewing machine and that if we're both going to be quilting it was time to buy another machine.  So that is what we did.  We bought a Janome Memory Craft 9400 which became the machine that I work on because of the computerized stitch features that it has.

Since the beginning, I have completed 5 quilts and many wall hangings and other smaller projects.  I have added to the stash of projects waiting to be completed and we have traveled around the country visiting quilt shops and buying patterns and kits that represent the local area.  I have enjoyed the time we spend together on this productive hobby and I am officially addicted to the process of quilting.

I will use this blog to share my projects and what I learn as well.  I hope that I will be able to share our love of fabric and the process of creating works of art with you.  Any day in the quilt room is super-fantastic so let's get started on a project.

Enjoy!
