Sunshine on a Stem
This wall hanging came from a quilt store in St. George, Utah. They sell it as a kit in their store and it was a fun applique project but the piecing was also fun to create the borders and backgrounds. I liked the different shades of yellow and gold, blended with the rust to really make this quilt look bright.

This kit is a laser cut kit so you do not have to cut any of the applique pieces. In the kit that I got the words "Sunshine on a stem" were done in what I would call reverse applique. The words were cut out of the blue and green fabric, and you place each of those on a piece of brown fabric to get them to show. I then used a small sized straight stitch right along the edge to make sure the edges stayed down and to limit fraying.
For the letters in the box, I reduced the size of my blanket stitch and did the edges just like I do any other edges. On the stems of the flowers, I also adjusted the size of my blanket stitch as I went so that I did not end up stitching over the entire width in the narrow parts leading to the leaves.
